Harvesting Squash And Pumpkin
Today we are harvesting squash and pumpkin in our allotment gardening for beginners video. October is a great month for harvesting pumpkin and squash as the sun has done its work and ripened the skins of the pumkin and squash ready for us to store them.
The pumpkin and squash need to be ripe to store them. The best way to get them ripe is to leave them on the plant until the stems die back. Then they are ready to pick. If you must pick them sooner because a frost is due then it’s a good idea to cut them with a length of stem still attached as this will allow them to ripen off the plant.
We store our pumpkin and squash at home on a cool, dry window sill. Before we bring them indoors we allow them to ripen in our garden on a garden table in full sunlight. We can turn them and get the last of the autumn sun on the skins before we bring them indoors. Wherever you store yours make sure it is frost free and vermin free. We prefer to have them on show as they look great and by being in the sunlight we can see if any are starting to rot at the stem and eat those next.
