January Allotment Tour
Welcome to our January allotment tour in our allotment gardening for beginners channel. Allotment gardening in January is dependant on the weather and in this video we have a frosty morning on the allotment.
Allotment gardening for beginners in the UK can be a fun time as there is a lot to learn but mistakes are never too serious. In our January tour around the allotment we have some sprouts showing on the rhubarb due to the warm weather last week. These shoots will probably die off due to the frost but the rhubarb is well established and will come back strong in the spring.
We still have crops to harvest as we sow seeds all year round. If you want to grow your own food all year then planning for the winter is essential as the crops are easy but slow growing. Vegetable gardening in the winter helps you to eat seasonally and reduce the food miles and plastics used to package food and vegetables.
We aim for self sufficiency in fruit and vegetables most of the year and this is great for our home steading preparation. Having our own homestead or smallholding is a goal that we are aiming for.
